Der Historiker und wissenschaftliche Leiter des Dokumentationsarchivs des Österreichischen Widerstandes, Gerhard Baumgartner, entwirft ein Szenario des Lebens in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere der 1930er Jahre. Damals wurden die von der Wirtschaftskrise schwer getroffenen burgenländischen Roma zu Sündenböcken gestempelt und nach der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten schrittweise deportiert und ermordet. Ihre Siedlungen (an die 140) wurden geplündert und dem Erdboden gleichgemacht. Nur einige hundert Burgenland-Roma überlebten den Porajmos/Holocaust.
Gerhard Baumgartner ist einer der führenden Historiker in diesem Bereich. Er war Mitglied der Österreichischen Historikerkommission und Leiter des Forschungsprojekts „Namentliche Erfassung der Holocaust-Opfer der österreichischen Roma und Sinti“. Aktuell arbeitet er zusammen mit dem Historiker Herbert Brettl an dem Projekt „Die verschwundenen Romasiedlungen“
